IEEE will be launching three new IEEE journals in 2011, covering a wide range of technologies:

IEEE Journal on Emerging and Selected Topics in Circuits and Systems will publish special issues covering the entire field of interest of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society with particular focus on emerging areas. It will include research contributions from leading experts, as well as presentations geared towards a wider audience of scientists and practitioners. Research will be in the form of overview and tutorial-style articles, as well as multidisciplinary research papers.

IEEE Journal of Photovoltaics is a peer-reviewed, archival publication reporting original and significant research results in the field of photovoltaics (PV). The journal publishes articles that connect this science base to PV science and technology. The scope of this publication, which is to be the premiere archival venue for advances in the broad field of photovoltaics, includes: fundamentals and new concepts, thin-film solar cells, III-V and concentrator solar cells, Si-based PV, organic PV, advances in PV characterization, and PV systems.

IEEE Transactions on Terahertz Science and Technology will focus on original research on devices and systems operating in the terahertz (THz) frequency range. It will include articles on applications and basic science using the THz spectrum in biology, medicine, imaging, atmospheric and environmental science, remote sensing, radio astronomy, spectroscopy, telecommunications, standoff detection and security, and nondestructive or nonintrusive evaluation and ultrafast science using pulsed THz beams.

Open Access Hearing

"The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee on Information Policy, the Census and National Archives announced it will hold a hearing on the issue of public access to federally funded research on Thursday, July 29. The hearing will provide an opportunity for the Committee to hear the perspectives of a broad range of stakeholders on the potential impact of opening up access to the results of the United States’ more than $60 billion annual investment in scientific research.

The hearing will examine the state of public access to federally-funded research in science, technology, and medicine. The hearing will assess and delineate the complex issues surrounding public access policies. The hearing will afford an opportunity for representatives from the areas of publishing, science and research, education and patient care to provide perspective on challenges, potential impact and opportunities regarding increased access.”

This open, public hearing will be held Thursday, July 29, at 2:00 PM in Rayburn House Office Building, room 2154.

In Denial?

An interesting interview with "Claudio Aspesi — an analyst based at the sell-side research firm Sanford Bernstein — [in which he] argues that [STM publisher Reed Elsevier] is 'in denial on the magnitude of the issue potentially affecting scientific publishing,' and suggests that it is time to 'pursue a progressive break-up of the company.'

He continues, stating: "If — and I need to emphasize if — the outcome of the budget constraints on academic libraries is a few years of slow or no revenue growth, the publishers will have, at the very least, to take costs out aggressively."

If libraries are to avoid being in denial, we would admit that this if is looking more and more of a reality across the ARL. The next few years could be a time of change in scholarly communications, and we will need input from faculty and students as we move forward.

A note about IEEE Xplore® and Google

"Dear IEEE Xplore Subscriber,

Recently we at IEEE discovered something about our IEEE Xplore usage patterns that we want
to pass on to you.

We learned that the majority of IEEE Xplore article metadata records had been eliminated from
Google search results. This means that anyone attempting to search for IEEE articles by using
Google or Google Scholar would be less likely to find IEEE content. Because half of all IEEE
Xplore traffic comes through Google searches, particularly among our corporate customers, this
could result in a significant drop in your IEEE Xplore usage.

If this sounds familiar, it is because we reported to you a similar issue that occurred late last year
that impacted IEEE discoverability in Google search results.

In investigating the current issue, we learned that Google had changed its indexing policy
regarding IEEE Xplore. In April 2010, Google decided to discard their previous IEEE Xplore
metadata index and completely rebuild an index of over 2.5 million IEEE Xplore metadata records.

Unfortunately, this action may have impacted the ability of your users to find IEEE Xplore articles
in Google and may have affected your IEEE Xplore usage over the past few months.

We have contacted Google to correct this situation by:
1. Suggesting ways they can accelerate this indexing process. To this end, we have made
additional IEEE Xplore bandwidth available to the Google crawler.
2. We are also trying to establish improved publisher relations with Google in order to find ways
to minimize the impact on IEEE Xplore users when these situations occur in the future.

We hope that the entirety of IEEE Xplore metadata will soon be discoverable again via Google."

Publishing and Science Education

This month's issue of ASEE's Prism has two articles that caught our attention. The first discusses changes in the publishing world, particularly the textbook publishing world. This is an issue we deal with everyday in libraries; journal and conference literature has moved online, of course, but the monograph world has been a little slower in doing so. We've moved thousands upon thousands of our book collection online over the last few years, and would like your opinion of e-books (as there will certainly be more to come!).

The second article pertains to Prof. Carl Wieman's efforts on science education. As librarians, we have to wonder how the two may or may not be related? As publishing, teaching, and learning move into a digital environment, what is the effect on students and their ability to find and utilize information effectively and independently?

Just an interesting question for a Tuesday.

Green Energy Portal Launched for Quick Public Access to Renewable Energy Research

Scifinder on the Web Demonstration

Scanners Temporarily Out of Service in Team Tech Rooms

The Engineering Library hosts three Team Technology Rooms, in which ITS maintains some equipment paid for by student computing fees. This equipment has included a scanner in each room, but currently ITS is servicing the scanners from these rooms and other labs across campus. You can find an open scanner (not located in a study room) on the 1st and 2nd floors of Norlin in the Information Commons and at Research Services, respectively. We will keep you posted about the scanners in our Team Technology Rooms as information becomes available, and in the meantime, you are still welcome to use the Team Technology Rooms for study spaces, especially when group work requires a desktop computer.

Research Resource: IEEE Digital Library-Xplore

The IEEE is a professional society dedicated to research and innovation in electrical engineering, computer science, and electronics. The IEEE Digital Library, Xplore, provides access to full text documents from IEEE journals, transactions, magazines, letters, conference proceedings, standards, and IEE (Institution of Electrical Engineers) publications. This is a great research resource for technical literature in electrical engineering, telecommunications, and computer science and is also useful for mechanical and aerospace engineering research. The IEEE Digital Library-Xplore has a new and improved interface including a new search engine, faceted search results, and options to personalize the site. We answered over 15,000 questions last year!

Did you know that what you ask at the Engineering Library is of great interest to us? We keep track of the questions your ask (anonymously, of course) so we can determine optimal staffing levels, training needs, assure the quality of the services we provide, and just to get a sense of what you need to know.

These questions are everything from "Can I print from these computers?" to "I need to find a specific paragraph in superseded ISO standard" (actual examples from last month). Some take 2 seconds, some take 2 hours (and yes, we keep track of the time we spend as well). We're not perfect about recording them (I'm sure we had questions over the weekends of Janurary, and just failed to enter them), but we do take it seriously.

In fact, we know that we meet your expectations a little better last year than in the past, and are above the average on campus. The data below is a function of how your perceive us relative to your expectation (in the survey instrument used, it's called an adequacy gap, and the bigger the better).

So, ask us! By phone, by email, but chat, by texting us on your phone. We'll do what we can to answer it.

Study Room Fines Increase to $5/hr

It's that time of the semester when projects take off and tests and assignments abound. Study space, especially group study spaces, are at a premium. In order to help manage the demand for the Libraries' study spaces, including study rooms at Norlin and other branch libraries, the Libraries will now assess a $5 fine per hour for study room keys returned late. That's up from $2/hour in previous semesters.

It is our hope that this new policy will make the rooms available to as many students as possible. And remember: If you have difficulty finding a place for your group to study, we also leave the Engineering Library conference room open when library staff does not need the room, and we invite quiet collaboration in the upper level of the library. Study rooms in the Business School and the ITLL in the Engineering Center are also available.

The Promise and Peril of Citation Analyses

An interesting post by Eugene Barsky at the University of British Columbia recently caught our attention. It refers to a report from Thomson Reuters (the company that produces the Web of Science, among other products) that ranks schools, colleges, and other agencies in the engineering research community by their scholarly output over the last decade: how many articles they publish and how often these articles are cited by other researchers. In terms of gross ouptut, the University of Illinois is on top (just over 44,000 papers). In terms of citations per article, Stanford wins (an average of 10.5 citations per article).

How does the University of Colorado at Boulder fair? Well, we are not included in the report (didn't make the top 20 in terms of gross output), but we were curious if we could somehow approximate the methodology and see where UCB does land in the list.

Using Web of Science, we constructed a farily complicated (and admittedly clumsy) search in order to find out how many articles our engineers have published in the last ten years or so. The result: 2,575, not far off the 20th place University of Wisconsin in the report. These articles were cited over 33,000 times, which would put UCB in 5th place for total citation, 1st in terms of citations per article!

BUT, if you remove self-citations (when a researcher cites their own previous work, a common practice), which is often done in such analyses (but should it always be?), we find just over 18,000 citations, just under 7 citations per article. This number would put us right in the thick of the above list.

What does this tell us about engineering research at UCB? Well, probably not all that much, to be honest. It tells us more about citation analyses than anything else. First, did this report remove self-citations? Almost definitely, but it doesn't say. Are they working from the same knowledge base? Again, probably: our search is in Web of Science and theirs is the "total citations to . . . papers published in Thomson Reuters-indexed Engineering journals," which is more or less the same thing. But our search was one thing (clumsy, perhaps), and what was theirs? Not sure. And perhaps most importantly, Thomson Reuters does not index all engineering journals. Plain and simple, this knowledge base is not comprehensive.

It is good to know, however, that no matter how you slice it, the engineering research enterprise at UCB seems to be quite on the pace. Just make sure you don't let a citation analysis be your sole source of information on such positions.

FAQ: How do I find textbooks?

The Engineering Library collects many textbooks, especially those used Engineering and Math classes, to help you with your study needs. There are two approaches to finding these materials: the "Reserves" search in our catalog, and keyword searching in the library catalog, Chinook.

If the library has a copy of the textbook, or if a professor or department can provide a copy, we will generally place the materials on "Reserve," which means that they are kept behind the Circulation Desk and circulate from 2 to 72 hours. This limited check-out period helps us to facilitate sharing between all the students in a given class. This is also why fines are so high on Reserve materials: $2/hour. The easiest way to search for something that a professor has placed on Reserve is our "Reserves" search. Go to our catalog homepage at http://libraries.colorado.edu/. About mid-way down the page, there is a link for "Reserves:"

You'll be prompted to search either by course number or by professor name:

You can also enter the course number or professor's name in the basic search bar on our catalog homepage, and be sure that you are searching within "Keyword-Beta" mode (see image below).

Keep in mind, though, that unless a professor tells us to put a textbook on Reserve, we have no way of knowing that the Reserve is needed. If a Reserves search doesn't produce any hits, you can try searching the catalog by title at http://libraries.colorado.edu/. Because textbooks often have general titles like "Heat Transfer" or "Chemistry," you'll probably get a lot of hits you need to wade through if you perform a simple title search. Try searching by keyword, either in "Keyword-Classic" or "Keyword-Beta" mode so that you can enter both the title and the author in one line:

Very often, if we do have a book and if that book has not been placed on Reserve, it will be checked out. You can recall the item from the patron who has the item out, but there may be a long waiting list. You might also request the item through Prospector, (see http://cuengineeringlibrary.blogspot.com/2009/11/research-resource-prospector.html for a tutorial), but be aware that many other people from your class may already have requested any copies of the textbook available through Prospector as well.

Don't hesitate to contact us by IM, phone, or in person at the Information Desk at the Engineering Library if you have any trouble finding a textbook, whether or not you believe it should be on Reserve!

Scholarly Publishing Roundtable Releases a Report

The Scholarly Publishing Roundtable presented a report outlining the shared principles of scholarly communication and recommendations for facilitating access to scholarly information. This report was presented to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Science and Technology and emphasizes the importance of the peer-review process, sustainable business models for journals, archiving and preserving published content, and supporting open access.

OSTP to Launch Public Forum to Discuss Options for Improving Public Access to Results of Federally Funded Research

"The Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Executive Office of the President and the White House Open Government Initiative is launching a “Public Access Policy Forum” to invite public participation in thinking through what the Federal government’s policy should be with regard to public access to published federally-funded research results. To that end, OSTP will conduct an interactive, online discussion beginning Thursday, December 10."

Open access to academic literature (and possibly data?) is an important issue for the Libraries, as evidenced by Dean Williams's page on scholarly communication. We are a member of the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition, among other initiatives, and hope one day that access to the scholarly cannon is more flexible and affordable for all.

Knovel is a platform including a search engine and a repository of reference works in engineering fields. Libraries can selectively subscribe to works in different subject areas through the Knovel platform. On Dec. 1, 2009 Knovel launched a new subject category within its repository, which we subscribe to. The new category, "Nanotechnology," contains materials intended to provide ready reference for nanomaterials' properties, manufacture, and safety. In addition to ready reference, this broad-based content is intended to orient scientists and engineers to emerging technologies in a rapidly advancing field.

To browse the new "Nanotechnology" subect category within Knovel, access Knovel as usual by going to libraries.colorado.edu and clicking on the link to "Find Articles and More."

The option to search for a database by title appears at the bottom of the "Find Articles and More" screen. Search for "Knovel" here:

From ASEE's First Bell, an interesting article on research out of Texas A&M:

Cottonseed, Engineered To Be Edible, Could Help Feed Developing Countries.

The AP (11/30) reports, Keerti S. Rathore, a researcher at Texas A&M University, "has found a way to reduce" a toxin called gossypol "in cottonseed that until now could only be eaten by cattle." The initiative "to neutralize" gossypol in the seeds has been around since the 1950s, "when scientists produced a gossypol-free plant by shutting off the gene that produces the toxin throughout the plant. But without gossypol, insects and diseases ravaged the cotton." Rathore, however, "found a way to shut off gossypol production in only the seeds, leaving stems, leaves, flowers and tissue protected." As a result, "the new seeds can be eaten by pigs, chickens, fish and humans and could show up in protein bars, shakes, breads, cookies and other foods within about 10 years. The amount of cotton already grown worldwide contains enough protein to feed 500 million people per year, researchers said."

We will, however, be closed evenings and weekends, and on Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving Holiday. We will resume normal hours on Sunday, 11/29. Those hours again are:

Research Resource: Prospector

If a book, journal, CD, DVD, or other materials are not available at one of the University Libraries, CU faculty, staff, and students have the option to request materials from another library using Prospector. Prospector is a unified library catalog of 25 public, academic, and special libraries in Colorado and Wyoming. When you are using Chinook, the library catalog, look for the Search Prospector to find it in another library button, or you can search Prospector directly at: http://prospector.coalliance.org/. Once you find the item you need, click on the “Request this Item” link and follow the directions for entering institution (UC-Boulder) and your Identikey information. Once the request is processed, the lending library will mail the materials you need to one of the University Libraries at CU.

Using Prospector is a great way to find the materials you need and it is generally faster than recalling a book owned by the University Libraries. Prospector materials are usually processed and delivered within 3-5 business days while a recall for a book that is already checked out can take 10+ days.

Still not finding what you need? In addition to Prospector, the Libraries have an excellent Interlibrary Loan Department that can borrow materials from libraries around the world. Both Prospector and Interlibrary Loan (ILL) are free services provided by the University Libraries. Viewers Enable Printing from Microsoft Files

The Engineering Library maintains limited software on its public access computers. Originally devised as terminals for searching the library catalog, we tried to discourage people from using these machines for doing more time-consuming work, sending them instead to facilities like the computer lab in room 217. Our view on whether or not we should provide a broader range of software on the machines is being discussed, however, and for now, we have at least installed Microsoft Viewers on the machines so that existing MS documents and files can be viewed and printed, if not edited. We welcome your suggestions about how we can use library computers to serve you best!

On Federated Searches and the Shoulders of Giants

Mark Martin has a fantastic post over on the OSTI blog related to federated search portals online. It's definitely worth a read. It mentions, among other resources, WorldWideScience.org, a federated search of over 60 online science data resources worldwide. These federated search interfaces are truly amazing, are very well developed, and really are great alternatives to more blunt tools that crawl the web rather, well, mindlessly.

But have you ever noticed when searching one of these resources that you find a citation, but can't get the full-text, or it the links lead you somewhere that charges a fee for the information?

This is because these federated searches often find results in proprietary databses (journal databases and the like), but you need to be a paying customer of that database (or another that has the same content) to be granted access.

That's where libraries come into play.

Check with us before you buy a paper online. We may have access to it in a database the federated search doesn't lead you to, or we may have it in print. In other words, you may have already purchased it through your affiliation with the University.

Also, be aware that many of these databases, while searching broadly across many databases, don't include deep indexing back in time. In other words, if you limit your searching to these resources alone, you may be limiting yourself to more recent research. In some cases--great. In other cases, you may miss something brilliant that was published 40 or 50 years ago.

Libraries provide citation indexes that index further back in time because we understand that all scientists stand on ths shoulders of their predecessors, even the greats.

Library Feature: The Conference Room

My last post informed you that study areas on the first floor of the library may now be used as group study spaces, a transition that has been very successful. We've seen an increase in the number of groups gathering on the first floor to collaborate together and everyone has been very respectful and considerate of noise levels. Thank you to everyone for your courtesy toward others who are studying in the library.

This change has been so popular that we have decided to open up our Conference Room as yet another designated space where groups are welcome to gather in order to work and talk quietly together. When the Conference Room is not in use for the business of Libraries staff, groups are welcome to use the space during regular business hours (8AM-5PM, M-F). You may be asked to make the room available if a meeting is scheduled. The Conference Room remains available for reservation and check-out outside of regular business hours.

All other guidelines for use of the Conference Room are posted in the room. We appreciate all feedback and suggestions about your library, so please comment here or contact us.

Research Resource: Engineering Village

Don’t know where to start your research? The Engineering Village database is a great resource because it combines two major engineering databases, Inpec and Compendex, and it also has information about technical reports from The National Technical Information Service (NTIS). Compendex is a comprehensive bibliographic database of scientific and technical engineering research available that covers all engineering disciplines. The Inspec database covers physics, electrical and electronic engineering, computer science, and related fields. NTIS contains unclassified reports from government agencies including NASA, the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Defense. Engineering Village searches across all of these databases at the same time which will save you time and help you find articles, technical papers, and conference proceedings simultaneously!

Use the button to find the articles you need and make sure that you are using the VPN to access the Libraries’ databases and electronic resources from off-campus. Check out our video tutorial about Engineering Village and please Ask Us if you have any questions or need help with your research!

On Judging Books (not by their covers)

Last week we posted a little about the use of our printed material. Use is one thing, but perception of that use is quite another. Did the book help you conduct your research, complete your assignment, discover a new technique, process, or yet another resource? These are hard questions for libraries to answer.

One way we have tried to answer this sort of question in the past is by using a survey called LibQUAL+. This survey is developed in collaboration with the Association of Research Libraries and is based on rigorous survey methodologies. It allows us to compare your perceptions of your library to other students and faculty members’ perceptions of the libraries at their institutions, all within the context of your expectations.

Below are data indicating your perception of how well the Engineering Library provided the “printed materials [you] need for [your] work.” Our response rate was not great, but you’ll see that for those who did respond, we did quite well when compared to the mean perception scores of the entire campus, and have for a number of years.

As the economic forecast of the State of Colorado’s budget worsens, however, we may need to take a more conservative approach to purchasing books. This means that it will be more important than ever before for you to tell us what books you need.

So, happy reading, and let us know if you need another or different book!

To best serve the study needs of all patrons, the Engineering Library has designated the first floor a place where groups may gather to collaborate *quietly.* Groups of 2-6 students may also check-out a Study Room or reserve a Team Technology Room online.

The downstairs stacks areas remain reserved for quiet study only.

If you experience any problems with noise throughout the library, please inform a person at the Information Desk on the first floor. We aim to accomodate the needs of everyone with this new arrangement so please let us know your comments, feedback and suggestions.

Study Room Policies, Fall 2009 and Beyond

Because of increased demand for our 4 Study Rooms and 3 Team Technology Rooms, beginning mid-semester and continuing indefinitely, we will be enforcing the following policies:

1. Study Rooms are for 2 or more people. The basement level of the library serves as a quiet study space for individuals. If others are noisy, please tell someone at the desk and we will ask them to quiet down.

2. Study Room keys cannot be renewed. If we have many available, we may check the key in and recheck it out for a single group, but you may be asked to wait 15 minutes to allow other groups a chance.

3. Team Technology Rooms *must* be booked in advance. Go to
http://ucblibraries.colorado.edu/engineering/index.htm, and look for the "Study Rooms" link in the bottom, right-hand corner of the webpage. Click on the 2nd tab, labeled "Team Technology Rooms." Click on the link "Click here to book an Engineering Library Team Technology Room." Click on any one of the three rooms and a grey button labeled "BOOK IT" will appear above the list of rooms. Click "BOOK IT" and enter an Identikey, etc. You'll be prompted to choose a time and date. Come to the Circulation Desk at the start time of your booking and a key will be checked out to you.

4. If you haven't made an advance booking for a Team Technology Room, or if you have difficulty setting up a booking on your own, we will be more than happy to guide you through the online booking process. Just ask at the Circulation Desk. We will require, however, that you make a booking online from one of our public computers before checking out a key.

5. A given patron can only have two Team Technology Room bookings at a given time. This helps us to enforce the libraries-wide rule that no more than 2 Study Room bookings can be made for a single individual on a single day.

6. Team Technology Rooms are funded by student computing fees, and therefore are only available to current CU students. Only staff members can make exceptions to this rule, and we will only make exceptions if Study Rooms are not busy.

7. Study Room keys cannot leave the library and we will no longer hold keys at the Circulation Desk. There are restrooms along the South wall of the basement floor of the library, and if you must leave the library, leave your key with a group member. We've had incidents where people monopolize the rooms by leaving a key at the desk "for ten minutes" and fail to return for upwards of an hour, so we simply can't do this favor for our patrons anymore.

8. The Engineering Library is not responsible for valuables and personal items left in the Study Rooms.

9. Team Tech Room bookings may be cancelled in favor of other groups if you are more than 10 minutes late for your booking.

10. Patrons who return keys after the two-hour check-out period, will be fined at a rate of $2/hour.

11. The Library reserves the right to ask patrons to vacate Study Rooms.

12. The first floor of the library is not considered an exclusively quiet study space, so if your group cannot find an available Study Room, you are welcome to collaborate upstairs. Be respectful of others and keep voices as low as possible.

We apologize for any inconvenience, and emphasize that these policies are intended to maximize study space for as many students as possible. Additional study spaces can be found in the Business Library in Leed's School of Business and in the Discovery Learning Center (DLC) in the Engineering Center, and we hope to soon open our own staff conference room for group use when it is not needed for Library functions. We know that campus is particularly full this year, and we want to help as much as we can. The Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute (RASEI) is a joint research institute partnering the University of Colorado at Boulder and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). RASEI is conducting interdisciplinary energy research and finding solutions for various energy challenges. RASEI just posted poster titles and abstracts, along with the PowerPoint presentations from their 2009 Annual Research Symposium. Similarly, the Colorado Renewable Energy Collaboratory is a partnership between research institutions including the University of Colorado at Boulder, Colorado School of Mines, Colorado State University, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and several industry research centers including the Colorado Center for Biorefining and Biofuels, Center for Revolutionary Solar Photoconversion, SolarTAC (Solar Technology Acceleration Center), Center for Research and Education in Wind, Carbon Management Center, and the Energy Efficiency & Management Center. Print is dead?

We at the Libraries, and perhaps in particular the Engineering Library, have made a concerted effort over the last few years to purchase electronic journals, proceedings, technical reports, and books. We know this is what our faculty and students want, and the use of these materials shows it.

And though this did have an initial effect on the circulation of our print materials, which showed decline from the early part of the decade, more precipitously from 2003-2005 or so, we've seen a big rebound since 2005. In the last fiscal year, about 20,0000 books were checked-out in our library: that's just under 5 books per student. And then these books were renewed about 10,000 times!

Clearly, print isn't dead, at least in the Engineering Library. What drives the use of it? Well, probably a lot of factors, one of which would be enrollment in the College, but even that is not significant enough to single-handedly drive this increase (yes, we've run the numbers).

So, what does it mean? We think it means that people still need books! We will continue to concentrate on electronic resources, but as librarians we also love to see people using books.

You can now search for course reserves using tags as keywords in Chinook-Beta! Each item on reserve at the Engineering Library has been "tagged" with both the course dept and number (e.g. ecen 4138) and with the last name of the professor (e.g. ecen hansen).

Using your identikey and password, you may also add tags to any item in Chinook. Scroll to the bottom of any record in Chinook to "Community Tags," click on Add a Tag and tag away! Tags are a great way to share resources with members of a group project and to log resources that you find useful or would like to check-out in the future.

VPN for 64-bit is Now Available!

In a recent library quality survey, many of you said that you needed a 64-bit VPN (Virtual Private Network) in order to access library resources from off campus. Good news! ITS has started a pilot program to test the new Juniper VPN for 64-bit Windows OS. It is currently available as a web-based solution and desktop client version.
The VPN Pilot Program offers:

• A SSL web-based version, which is designed for secure Internet browsing, accessing library resources, remote desktop, some campus file systems, and printing to local printers;
• A VPN desktop client version, NetConnect, which offers advanced functionality, such as split tunneling [e.g., split tunneling will allow users to access a local printer and a local fileserver while simultaneously connecting to campus resources]. NetConnect supports Windows 64-bit operating systems while the current CISCO VPN solution does not.

ITS expects to run the pilot program through mid-October at which time it is expected to become a regularly supported service.

Chinook Beta!

We are experimenting with a new catalog searching technology--Chinook Beta.

Starting just a few minutes ago, you'll see the search option "Keyword-Beta" in the familiar Chinook interface. But a search in this option will lead to a very different results screen, which includes faceted refiners, tag refiners, new titles, and you can even recast your search in Web of Science! And you can even add your own tags to records!

The search actually works differently, too, so you'll see different results. But don't worry--Chinook Classic is still a search option.

We will be very interested to know in the coming weeks and months how you feel these two search technologies work for you, so please let us know!

Synthesis Digital Library of Engineering and Computer Science

Synthesis Digital Library of Engineering and Computer Science is a collection of e-books written by leading engineers and scientists and published by Morgan & Claypool. The basic component of the Synthesis library is a 50 to 100 page lecture that synthesizes and analyzes an important research or development topic. The library and its lectures are organized by series with topics ranging from antennas and signal processing to biomedical and tissue engineering. New series and lectures will be added continuously and existing lectures will be revised as needed.

This collection includes a series on energy edited by Prof. Frank Krieth.

And we have begun a trial to another:

AccessEngineering

AccessEngineering is an e-book collection of McGraw-Hill's engineering handbooks, dictionaries, and other core publications. AccessEngineering provides access to over 250 online reference books with subjects in biomedical, chemical, civil, electrical, energy, environmental, material, mechanical, and optical engineering. A searchable dictionary containing more than 18,000 science and engineering terms is also included.

RefMobile is a new service that allows you to access your RefWorks account from your smart phone, PDA, or other mobile device with an Internet connection. To Access Your RefWorks account using RefMobile:

1. Navigate to www.refworks.com/mobile
2. Enter your *Group Code, Login Name and Password.
3. Select the Remember Login option if desired. Your login information will be remembered for 14 days from the date you check this box.

IEEE Xplore Digital Library, which has to this point been a full-text database of IEEE publications, just started indexing four journals provided by the American Institute of Physics (AIP) and the American Vacuum Society (AVS).

We are going to have Find it at CU configured so you can find full-text from these citations, but in the meantime you will need to follow this link after clicking on the PDF option in the citation:

An interesting new computational search engine built on Mathmatica, Wolfram Alpha:

"Wolfram|Alpha's long-term goal is to make all systematic knowledge immediately computable and accessible to everyone. We aim to collect and curate all objective data; implement every known model, method, and algorithm; and make it possible to compute whatever can be computed about anything. Our goal is to build on the achievements of science and other systematizations of knowledge to provide a single source that can be relied on by everyone for definitive answers to factual queries."

There are examples of engineering information, including everything from fluid mechanics calcuations to steam tables.

According to the Daily Camera, astronaut and space scientist John Grunsfeld accepted a faculty appointment at UCB from on board the shuttle Atlantis earlier this week!:

"BOULDER, Colo. — An astronaut who is working to repair the Hubble Space Telescope will soon be working with University of Colorado students.

CU announced Wednesday that John Grunsfeld, who is nearing the end of a successful NASA mission on board the space shuttle Atlantis to repair and refurbish the aging telescope, has been named an adjoint professor on the Boulder campus.

Grunsfeld confirmed his acceptance of the CU faculty position earlier this week in an e-mail from Atlantis. He will join the university’s astrophysical and planetary sciences department."

New Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Agreement

The University Libraries is pleased to announce our acceptance into the Global ILL Framework (GIF) Project. The GIF project is a reciprocal agreement between North American and Japanese academic libraries and research institutes to provide North American researchers with access to materials not available through normal ILL channels. We will now have access to the collections of over 150 Japanese libraries greatly increasing our ability to fulfill the needs of our patrons. In order to participate certain protocols must be followed, these protocols will be explained in an instruction guide that will be released early January 2009. We are honored to be the only academic library in the state of Colorado to participate in this project. This has been a cooperative initiative between Interlibrary Loan and Collection Development/Asian Studies bibliographer, Xiang Li. For more information please contact us.

The open access movement is of great importance to the University Libraries. Trends in the cost of scholarly publications are untenable and threaten our ability to provide students and researchers with current literature.

A 20-year projection conducted in 2000, for instance, of the cost of serials and monographs compared to Association of Research Libraries expenditures and actual materials purchased, predicted a 1,774% increase in the cost of serials and a 1,244% increase in ARL expenditures, but a decline of 16% in ARL serials subscriptions (see figure below). This diminishing return on the Libraries' investment in content is of paramount concern to us.

First and foremost, the Libraries our sympathy to those affected. We know the damage entails materials well beyond those provided by the Libraries, and appreciate your attention to them. If you believe Libraries materials were damaged during the flood in your office, we ask that they follow this procedure:

1) Login to My Chinook with your identikey to determine what materials are checked out to you: https://libraries.colorado.edu/patroninfo

2) If any were damaged in the flood, please inform Kaitlin Hoke at kaitlin.hoke@colorado.edu or 303-492-5397.

3) Please return damaged books to the Libraries so we can assess the extent of the damage. In most cases the materials will need to be replaced.

As of July 1st, the National Technical Information Service (NTIS) database can be accessed using Engineering Village 2. The Engineering Village 2 database can be used to simultaneously search Inspec, Compendex, and NTIS.

The National Technical Information Service (NTIS) database from the U.S. Department of Commerce provides access to unclassified reports from influential U.S. and international government agencies. The database contains over two million critical citations from government departments such as NASA, the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Defense. Most items cited in this database are available in microfiche format in the Government Publications Library.

ASME Digital Library Is Here!

The University Libraries completed its purchase of the ASME Digital Library that may be of interest to faculty and students in mechanical and other engineering disciplines.

The ASME Digital Library is the American Society of Mechanical Engineers' primary repository of current and archival literature featuring ASME's Transaction Journals from 1990 to the present and ASME's Conference Proceedings from 2002 to the present. As the ASME Digital Library continues to expand, it will ultimately include the complete archive of ASME's Transactions Journals dating back to 1880.

New Search Scopes Added to Chinook

A number of new "scopes" were recently added to the "collections" drop down list from the main page of Chinook. These include books, journals/serials, maps, music recordings, scores, spoken recordings, theses, video recordings, and more.

To allow patrons to perform advanced searches within the scopes (for example, limiting a search in "video recordings" to "DVD"), links to advanced searches within each scope have also been added above the Chinook search box.

We will continue to add functionality to make the online catalog easier to use. Stay tuned!

Maymester Hours

Our Maymester hours are now posted on our website.

We will be open Mon-Fri 8am-5pm, noon-5pm on Saturdays, and we will be closed on Sundays through the end of May. We will also be closed on Memorial Day, May 26th, and the last Saturday of the term, May 31st.
